LOL! Yes, all the old dears around my way look like this too! It must be some kind of uniform. All I know is that when my mum got to 65 she did the same thing - grey curly perm - and when I asked why she said 'because now I am 65 this is what I am supposed to look like.' I give up!

Older women and those prematurally aged do not look good with long hair. So far as having it permed, why not? My mother-in-law, who died 5 weeks ago aged 91 (very nearly 92) had her hair permed and it made feel good. Anything wrong with that?

LOL! My friend and I were pondering on this question the other day... We came to the conclusion that due to the amount of women she gets coming to the salon she works at for perms/blue rinses/sets, that there must be a rule book for the over 65's that states the laws regarding this hairstyle and that it is a MUST.... or else.....

Well...Hair naturally goes grey and gets thinner as one gets older... so a perm thickens it and keeping it short also helps to give body to the hair.

I think that ease of care enters the equation...IF women are still wearing blue hair in your neighborhood, I assume you live in a rather remote area. Most women tend to blonde their hair, wear it short, and around here, rarely do I see the short, permed look...short and "boy" cut is norm, very easy to maintain. Hair density enters into the equation also...thin hair looks fuller when curled. Let's face it, May West got away with the long white hair, but.....even she didn't look that good with it, and she was beautiful.

The majority of my old school chums from the early and mid 40's have dyed hair, med to short and very stylish. My mom born in 1920 had snow white hair about 3" long and kinky. Age is the factor here. Vanity is also mixed in, mom would throw a tantrum if she didn't get a new perm every 6 weeks or sooner.

I think it's to do with the fashion of their generation. You should see the looks of disapproval they give me because I refuse to conform to stereotype. Anyway, if that's what makes them feel better, let them, I just hope short and permed is never made compulsory.

Yes it was fashionable when they were younger to have a perm,and they like it that way,as for it being short its less hassle.As now its fashionable to have poker straight hair with two colour blonde's going through it. Spray tans ect.Each generation to there own mode of style
